elcome to the website of Fiona and Roy Smith from Chesterfield, on the edge of the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom, where we have lived in the village of Hasland since 1983.

We love the area in which we live and believe it is one of the most beautiful places in Great Britain. Our children, Matthew and Katie have spent most of their lives in this area and as a family we consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to live in Derbyshire.

We have also been fortunate to have enjoyed some exciting and amazing adventures around the world and in doing so have met so many new friends. We hope that maybe, you’ll enjoy looking through our web pages and meeting them too.

We have also included some of the extensive family history that Roy has been undertaking for many years. This historical digging has revealed some interesting facts about our ancestors. On Roy’s side of the family we claim ancestry back to the time before the Norman invasion of Duke William ‘the Conqueror’ in 1066.

In some fascinating links there are also ancestors related to some of the most noble families in England including those of Vernon, Bagot, Danvers, Cecil, Broughton, Cave and Staunton. We can also throw into this mix a highwayman who was hanged in 1791; an soldier who was at the Battle of Omdurman, served in the Boer War and went over the top at The Somme. Amongst our other military heroes are family members who served in both World Wars and more recently the Bosnian and Iraq conflicts.

Fiona’s ancestors include a father and son who emigrated to the USA in the 1840’s and who fought, and died, in the American Civil War.
